Global Results Are In…Virtualization Is Impacting Disaster Recovery Planning
Aug. 28, 2008 | Katie Beck
Symantec released its annual Disaster Recovery survey today and the global results are in. Here are a few interesting survey results that caught my eye:
  • In the past year, one-third of organizations surveyed had to execute their disaster recovery plans due to a variety of factors, such as hardware and software failure, external security threats, natural disasters, etc.
  • Virtualization is the major factor that is causing more than half (55 percent) of respondents globally – 64 percent in North America – to reevaluate their Disaster Recovery plans.
  • Respondents reported that 35 percent of their virtual servers are not currently covered in organizations’ DR plans, and only 37 percent
of respondents reported that they back up all of their virtual systems.

Independent market research firm Applied Research West conducted the study of more than 1,000 IT managers across 15 countries to gain insight and understanding into some of the more complicated factors associated with disaster recovery. To learn more about the results, check out the press release.

What was that Yellow Blur at the Infineon Raceway?
Aug. 26, 2008 | Cory Edwards
Last week at our Cupertino campus, the Symantec sponsored IndyCar – for Luczo Dragon Racing Team – and its driver Tomas Scheckter made a special pit-stop for employees. Tomas and car were visiting before the big race last Sunday at the Grand Prix of Sonoma County at the Infineon Raceway. During the Cupertino pit stop, John Thompson spoke briefly to employees comparing innovation on the race track to innovation in software. Little tweaks and fixes can make major speed improvements that separate the best cars/software from the middle of the pack.

Disaster Recovery On the Go
Aug. 13, 2008 | Katie Beck
Symantec is partnering with Kingston Technology to offer a quick and simple method of disaster recovery for SMBs. Kingston Technology preloaded its DT400 flash drives with Symantec Recovery Disk (a component of Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery), a tool that auto-detects hardware and loads the appropriate drivers to reboot the system. This allows IT administrators to restore both individual files and folders, as well as Windows desktop, laptop or server should they experience a hardware crash or failure.

So what does this mean? For IT administrators or tech support at small and mid-sized businesses, this is great news. It allows them to have disaster recovery in their pocket or on-the-go. Should they experience a hardware crash or system failure, they can be back up and running in minutes. Also ideal for IT admins who need to quickly restore an employee’s laptop after it blue screens.

When combined with Backup Exec System Recovery, users will reap even more benefits. To get more information, check out the Kingston press release: http://www.kingston.com/press/2008/flash/08b.asp

McCain, Obama, Olympics, and World War 3 – August State of Spam Report
Aug. 5, 2008 | Cory Edwards
Today we released our August spam report on our State of Spam site providing insights into the trends our antispam engineering team has observed during the month of July. Headline or tabloid spam continues to be the attack du jour this summer with plays on current events being most popular.

The U.S. presidential election and the Olympic Games in particular continue to be chosen among spammers with malicious intent. The team also reported seeing far-fetched messages such as one appearing to “break news” regarding the start of World War 3 offering an embedded video of a cataclysmic bomb. However, like so many of the spam messages, the only bomb dropped is the malicious code opened on the user’s system.

Enterprise Vault – The Readers’ Choice
July 30, 2008 | Cory Edwards
It’s been a rewarding couple of months for the Enterprise Vault product team. Last month Gartner announced Enterprise Vault’s position in the Leader’s Quadrant of the 2008 Magic Quadrant for Email Active Archiving.

Today, the community of network administrators over at WindowsNetworking.com announced that Enterprise Vault has won its Readers’ Choice Award for Email Archiving Software. The WindowsNetworking.com community attracts around 660,000 network administrators and specialists each month. See their poll results and the accompanying story here. Great news for a market projected to mushroom at a rate of 36% annually through 2012.

Symantec Rocks: “ManageThis” in Battle of the Bands
July 18, 2008 | Linda Smith Munyan
Four years ago, a group of Symantec employees got together to play at a company party. Since then, ManageThis has become a fixture on the Utah music scene, playing at events around the state as well as in Las Vegas and Europe.

And their success continues to grow. FORTUNE Magazine hosts an annual Battle of the Corporate Bands competition along with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It’s billed as a “celebration of musicians with day jobs”.

ManageThis is now one of six bands from the Western U.S. chosen to compete in Los Angeles at a regional contest on July 19. The finals take place in Cleveland, Ohio in October where the top 8 bands from the US and EMEA regional competitions will play to win.

Show your support for ManageThis at The Key Club in West Hollywood, CA on July 19 at 7:00pm.

State of Spam Report - July
July 02, 2008 | Cory Edwards
Imagine a spammer hacking into your webmail and sending their spam messages with malicious intent to every one of your contacts. That’s just one of the disturbing trends our spam researchers discovered during the month of June. I just now posted the latest findings of our monthly spam research – the July State of Spam Report with the details of this attack and several other new trends.

While we didn’t monitor any major spike in the overall spam volume (still ~ 80%), we found spammers looking to capitalize on the upcoming Olympic Games and increasingly employing social engineering tricks to get users to open their messages by using outrageous news headlines. See the report for details of this and other trends as well as a volume breakdown by geographical region.
